How to keep a timesheet
- 01
Open the sheet at the start of the month
Type the year and month and add your team. Mark known leave and rest days up front.
- 02
Mark it every day
Before the day ends, note who came, who was on leave and who was off sick. Trying to remember at the end of the month leads to mistakes.
- 03
Tie sick days and leave to their papers
Check sick and leave days against the doctor’s note or the leave request.
- 04
Write overtime in hours
Record work beyond 45 hours a week hour by hour; it is paid at a higher rate.
- 05
Check the totals at the end of the month
Each employee’s days worked, leave and holidays are what their pay is worked out from. Go over them with the employee.
Rules for timesheets (Turkey)
- Work beyond 45 hours a week is overtime; each hour is paid at the normal hourly wage plus fifty percent.
- Overtime can’t exceed 270 hours a year and needs the employee’s consent.
- A weekly rest day not worked is paid in full.
- A public holiday not worked is paid; if it is worked, one more day’s wage is paid on top.
- Annual leave days are paid.

Questions
- What is a timesheet?
- A daily record of which days each employee worked, was on leave, off sick or on a holiday during the month. Pay and overtime are worked out from it.
- Which codes does the timesheet use?
- W worked, A annual leave, S sick, U unpaid leave, E excused leave, R weekly rest day, H public holiday, X absent. The template offers these codes and counts them per employee.
- How are rest days and public holidays shown?
- A weekly rest day is R, a public holiday H. Someone who works on a public holiday gets W for that day; in Turkey that day is paid an extra day’s wage.
- How do I record overtime?
- Write the month’s total overtime hours in the “Overtime (hours)” column. Every hour beyond 45 a week is overtime.
- Can I use the template in Google Sheets?
- Yes. Upload it to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets; the days, codes and totals work there too.
